Position Description

The RET2 is part of the Communications Department and stands under the supervision of the Chief Radio Electronics Technician (CRET). The incumbent operates and maintains the ship's military communication suites. The incumbent will be required to fulfill the requirements set out below under some degree of guidance and supervision, which should lessen as the incumbent becomes more experienced, through training and tour assignments.

SPECIFICATIONS

• Transfers information by state-of-the-art technology utilizing tactical/or commercial satellites on a global basis and traditional Radio Frequency (RF) systems. Operations are routinely performed within a strike group with specific circuits and protocols that must be adhered to. Complies with Communications Security (COMSEC) policies, procedures, and Cryptographic equipment requirements on both transmission and receipt of communication signals.

• Learn to operate, monitor and control information systems in several Radio Frequency Spectrums in support of worldwide telecommunications networks. The incumbent will advise on capabilities, limitations and condition of equipment in their care as time progresses.

• Perform assigned troubleshooting, maintenance and repair of Command, Control, Communications, and Computers (C4) including equipment used for communication, detection, tracking, recognition and identification. Maintain the ship's operational readiness, including its capability to handle two secure Fleet Broadcast Satellite Communications channels for both sending and receiving classified message traffic and tactical information via messaging and voice.

• Possess a basic knowledge of electronic theory and is competent to perform required equipment inspection, evaluation of performance, problem troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance.

• Complete limited repairs to shipboard communications systems under varying levels of supervision. The incumbent is capable of operating radio cryptographic equipment. The incumbent is required to become proficient in interpretation of electronics technical manuals, drawings, specifications, and schematic drawings.

• Capable of using diagnostic programs, electronic test equipment and tools. In time, the incumbent must be capable of diagnosing problems and providing appropriate information to the watch supervisor. The incumbent is required to possess knowledge and understanding of the Electrical Safety Program and safety requirements of the various types of equipment worked upon. In performing the work, incumbent is required to observe all safety rules to ensure personal safety and safety of co-workers. Incumbent is required to be proficient in the performance of shipboard emergency drills, emergency action plan (EAP), and emergency destruction plan (EDP), performing all duties as assigned. The incumbent will be required to work aloft and over the side while maintaining antenna systems.

• Be familiar with duties and responsibilities as it relates to watch-to-watch inventories/turnovers.

• Possess a basic knowledge of all Communications, Operational and Administrative publications assigned to the Communications center.

• Attain and retain a Top Secret clearance.

• Possess the ability to operate PC systems that utilize applicable software applications.

• Demonstrated knowledge and ability to train users on COMSEC policies and procedures.

• Ensure continuing application of and compliance with EEO laws, regulations and policies.
